How to Measure Your Steps per Mile (in 5 Minutes)

Β· 7 min read

Averages say a mile is 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps β€” 2,112 with the standard 2.5 ft stride (see the full answer by height). But averages can be off by 10% or more for any one person. If you want your step count, fitness tracker or steps to miles calculator to match reality, you need your own stride length. Measuring it takes about five minutes and a known distance.

How to measure your steps per mile

  1. Find a measured distance. A standard 400 m running track is ideal β€” four laps is very close to one mile (1,600 m vs 1,609 m). An American football field (100 yards = 300 ft) or a 30 m stretch marked with a tape measure also works.
  2. Walk at your normal pace and count every step. Start a few steps before the line so you are already at speed when you cross it.
  3. Calculate your stride. Divide the distance by your step count. For example, 300 ft Γ· 128 steps = 2.34 ft (28.1 in).
  4. Get steps per mile. 5,280 Γ· 2.34 = 2,256 steps per mile.
  5. Repeat and average. Do it two or three times. If you also run, do one measurement at running pace β€” your running stride is much longer.

You can skip the maths: enter the distance and your step count into the stride length calculator and it returns your stride, steps per mile and steps per km.

Put your stride to work

Once you have your stride:

  • In our calculators: open the custom stride field in the steps to miles calculator and enter it in inches or centimetres. Every result β€” miles, km, time and calories β€” then uses your real stride.
  • In your fitness tracker: most apps (phone, watch or band) let you set stride length manually. Without it they guess from the height you entered, which is often where wrong distances come from.

Why steps per mile varies so much

A mile is always 5,280 feet. The only thing that changes is how much of that distance you cover with each step β€” your stride length. Divide 5,280 by your stride in feet and you have your steps per mile:

steps per mile = 5,280 Γ· stride length (ft)

A 2.5 ft stride gives 2,112 steps. A 2.2 ft stride gives 2,400. A 3.0 ft running stride gives 1,760. Small differences in stride add up to hundreds of steps over a mile, which is why the β€œ2,000 steps = 1 mile” rule of thumb is only a starting point.

No time to measure? Estimate from your height

Height is the best simple predictor of stride. A widely used estimate is that your walking stride is about 41.3% of your height if you are a woman and 41.5% if you are a man. Here is what that means in steps per mile:

Steps per mile by height
Height Women walking Men walking Women running Men running
4β€²10β€³ (147 cm) 2,645 2,632 2,116 2,106
5β€²0β€³ (152 cm) 2,557 2,545 2,046 2,036
5β€²2β€³ (157 cm) 2,474 2,462 1,980 1,970
5β€²4β€³ (163 cm) 2,397 2,386 1,918 1,908
5β€²6β€³ (168 cm) 2,324 2,313 1,860 1,851
5β€²8β€³ (173 cm) 2,256 2,245 1,805 1,796
5β€²10β€³ (178 cm) 2,192 2,181 1,753 1,745
6β€²0β€³ (183 cm) 2,131 2,120 1,705 1,696
6β€²2β€³ (188 cm) 2,073 2,063 1,659 1,651
6β€²4β€³ (193 cm) 2,019 2,009 1,615 1,607
6β€²6β€³ (198 cm) 1,967 1,957 1,573 1,566

Every extra inch of height takes roughly 30–35 steps off each mile. A 5β€²0β€³ woman walks a mile in about 2,560 steps; a 6β€²2β€³ man does it in about 2,060 β€” a difference of nearly 500 steps. The steps per mile by height chart has running figures too.

Does gender change your stride?

Only slightly, once height is accounted for. The stride factors for women (0.413) and men (0.415) are almost identical; the bigger difference in the averages comes from the fact that men are taller on average. A 5β€²8β€³ woman and a 5β€²8β€³ man take within about a dozen steps of each other per mile.

If you are taller or shorter than average for your gender, go by your height β€” or better, your measurement β€” not the gender average.

How pace changes your stride

Speeding up stretches your stride, and running stretches it a lot. A reasonable estimate is that running stride is about 25% longer than walking stride, though fast runners can exceed that.

Activity Typical stride Steps per mile
Slow walk (2 mph) 2.1–2.3 ft 2,300–2,500
Normal walk (3 mph) 2.3–2.6 ft 2,000–2,300
Brisk walk (4 mph) 2.6–2.8 ft 1,900–2,000
Easy jog (5–6 mph) 2.9–3.3 ft 1,600–1,800
Running (7+ mph) 3.5–4.5 ft 1,200–1,500

Approximate ranges for an adult of average height. Your numbers will differ β€” that is why measuring helps.

Why your fitness tracker might disagree

Most trackers estimate stride from the height you entered in the app. If the height is wrong, or your real stride differs from the formula, the distance will be off β€” often by 5–15%. Phones carried in a bag and wrist trackers during activities like pushing a trolley can also miss or add steps.

The fix is the one above: measure your stride and enter it in your tracker settings.
