What changes your steps per mile?
Height and leg length. Stride is roughly 41% of height, so every extra inch of height takes about 30–35 steps off each mile.
Pace. When you speed up, your stride lengthens. A brisk walk can take 10% fewer steps per mile than a stroll, and running takes 20–30% fewer.
Terrain and fatigue. Hills, sand, crowds and tiredness shorten your stride, so the same mile takes more steps. Treadmill walking is usually close to your normal overground count.
For a precise number, use the stride length calculator to measure your own stride.
