The mile used today is the international mile: exactly 1,609.344 meters, or 5,280 feet. It was fixed in 1959, when the United States, the United Kingdom and four Commonwealth countries signed the International Yard and Pound Agreement and defined the yard as exactly 0.9144 m. Every other customary length (feet, inches, chains, furlongs) is a fixed fraction of that yard, which is why each converter here uses an exact conversion factor rather than a rounded one.

The word comes from the Roman mille passus, "a thousand paces", where a pace was two steps. Queen Elizabeth I's 1593 Act of Parliament set the English statute mile at 8 furlongs, and that is the length the 1959 agreement pinned to the meter. The mile is still the everyday unit for road distances in the US and UK, while ships and aircraft use the longer nautical mile.
