How are calories from steps calculated?

Walking burns roughly 0.53 kcal per pound of body weight per mile, and running about 0.75 kcal per pound per mile. The calculator converts your steps to miles using your stride, then multiplies by your weight and the activity factor.

Example: a 180 lb person walking 10,000 steps covers about 4.73 miles. 4.73 × 180 × 0.53 ≈ 451 kcal. These are gross figures — they include the calories your body would burn at rest during the same time.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories does 1,000 steps burn?

About 30 to 50 calories for most adults walking at a normal pace. Heavier people and faster walkers burn more.

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?

Roughly 300 to 500 calories. A 160 lb (73 kg) adult burns about 400 calories walking 10,000 steps.

Do I burn more calories running the same number of steps?

Yes. Each running step covers more distance and uses more energy, so 10,000 running steps can burn 60–80% more than 10,000 walking steps.

How accurate are step-based calorie estimates?

They are rough. Real energy use depends on pace, incline, fitness, age and body composition. Treat the number as a guide, not a precise measurement.
