Steps to miles formula
The calculator estimates your stride from your height, then multiplies it by your steps.
The formula
miles = steps × stride (ft) ÷ 5,280
stride (ft) = height (in) × 0.413 (women) or 0.415 (men) ÷ 12
running stride ≈ walking stride × 1.25
- 1 Convert your height to inches. 5′7″ = 5 × 12 + 7 = 67 inches.
- 2 Estimate your stride. 67 × 0.413 ÷ 12 = 2.31 ft for a woman (2.32 ft for a man).
- 3 Multiply by your steps. 10,000 × 2.31 = 23,100 ft.
- 4 Divide by 5,280. 23,100 ÷ 5,280 = 4.38 miles (7.04 km).

How accurate is converting steps to miles?
Any conversion is only as good as the stride it uses. The generic 2.5 ft stride that most converters assume fits an adult of about 6′0″; for a 5′2″ walker it overstates distance by about 17%. That is why this calculator asks for your height and gender first — it brings most people within 5–10% of their real distance.
Pace matters too. A brisk walk lengthens your stride and a run lengthens it by roughly a quarter, so switch to Run when you convert a run. Hills, crowds and fatigue shorten it again.
For the closest match, measure your stride once (it takes five minutes — see how to measure your steps per mile) and enter it as a custom stride. Use the same number in your fitness tracker's settings and its distance will line up with ours.

Steps to miles FAQs
How many steps are in a mile?
Most adults take 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps per mile. With the average stride of 2.5 feet it is about 2,112 steps. Running takes fewer steps — roughly 1,000 to 2,000 per mile — because each stride is longer.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
10,000 steps is about 4.7 miles (7.6 km) with an average 2.5 ft stride. For most people it falls between 4 and 5 miles depending on height and pace.
How do I convert steps to miles?
Multiply your steps by your stride length in feet, then divide by 5,280. Your walking stride is roughly your height in inches × 0.413 for women or × 0.415 for men, divided by 12. Without your height, divide your steps by 2,112.
Does height change how far my steps go?
Yes. Taller people have longer strides, so the same steps cover more miles. A 5′0″ woman takes about 2,560 walking steps per mile, while a 6′2″ man takes about 2,060.
How many miles is 10,000 running steps?
About 5.9 miles. Running strides are roughly 25% longer than walking strides, so an average runner covers a mile in about 1,700 steps instead of 2,112.
How accurate is this steps to miles calculator?
Using your height, gender and activity, it is usually within about 5–10% of your true distance. For the most accurate result, measure your own stride and enter it in the custom stride field.
How many steps a day should I walk?
Large studies link 8,000–10,000 steps a day with lower risk of early death in adults under 60, and 6,000–8,000 for adults over 60. Any increase from a low baseline helps.
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
About 300 to 500 calories for most adults, depending on body weight and pace. A rough estimate is 0.04 kcal per walking step, or about 400 kcal for 10,000 steps.
