How do you measure your stride length at home?

  1. Measure a straight distance of at least 20 steps — 100 feet or 30 metres works well. A tape measure, a sports pitch or a running track all do the job.
  2. Start walking a few steps before the start line so you reach your natural pace.
  3. Count every step between the start and finish lines.
  4. Divide the distance by the number of steps. 100 ft ÷ 42 steps = 2.38 ft (28.6 in).
  5. Repeat two or three times and average the results. Do it again at a running pace if you also run.

Enter the result as a custom stride in the steps to miles calculator and update your fitness tracker settings — most trackers use a height-based guess that can be off by 10% or more.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average stride length?

About 2.2 ft (26 in, 66 cm) for women and 2.4 ft (29 in, 73 cm) for men when walking. Running strides are longer, often 3–4 ft.

How do I measure my stride length?

Mark out a known distance such as 30 m or 100 ft, walk it at your normal pace, count your steps and divide the distance by the number of steps. Repeat a few times and average the results.

Is stride length the same as step length?

In fitness trackers, 'stride length' usually means the distance of one step (heel to heel of opposite feet). In gait science, a stride is two steps. This calculator uses the fitness-tracker meaning.

Does stride length change with speed?

Yes. Walking faster or running lengthens your stride, which is why a mile takes fewer running steps than walking steps.
